ABOUT US
Welcome to the JKA Rockwall Dojo. We are affiliated with the Japan Karate Association (JKA) World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, and with Shiba Dojo of Oregon. We train in JKA Shotokan Karate as it is taught and practiced in Japan. We welcome all adult Karate practitioners regardless of affiliation, or skill level, from beginners to advanced. The JKA Rockwall Dojo is a non-political group. We are focused on maintaining the integrity and high standards of the Japan Karate Association.
Classes are taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm - 7:00pm. We are located in the Radiant Yoga Studio at 449 E Interstate 30, Rockwall, Texas. Contact us today for a free beginner's trial class and experience the difference!
There are no contracts at JKA Rockwall.

Susan Gunn
JKA 3rd degree blackbelt

Susan Gunn is a 3rd degree blackbelt with over 25 years of experience. She began her Shotokan karate training in 2001 with the American Amateur Karate Federation. Susan received her 1st Dan in 2012 and her 2nd Dan in 2016, both with Jerry Fitzpatrick Sensei as Chief Examiner. She received her 3rd Dan in 2025 with Taniyama Takuya Sensei as Chief Examiner.
She has attended many local seminars including several with Hidetaka Nishiyama Sensei and competed in regional tournaments in Kata and Kumite. She began training with Shiba Sensei in May of 2018 and is very grateful for the excellent instruction and traditional Karate values of the JKA Oregon Shiba Dojo.
Dojo Kun
Senior instructors at the JKA developed the Dojo Kun, which everyone studying at the JKA commits to memory. With each practice session at the dojo, students kneel in the seiza position and repeat these five precepts out loud. This process reminds the students of the right attitude, frame of mind, and virtues to strive for both within the dojo and outside.

Gichin Funakoshi was the founder of Shotokan karate. He is known as the father of modern karate. He taught karate at various Japanese universities and became honorary head of the Japan Karate Association upon its establishment in 1949.
